Label Fails We Spot Everywhere (And How to Fix Them)

Label Fails We Spot Everywhere (and How to Fix Them for Good)

When you work in the label industry, you develop a bit of a sixth sense. Some people notice bad signage. Others notice crooked picture frames. Us? We can’t help but notice labels that are failing in the wild — and sadly, we see them all the time.

The truth is, a label that doesn’t stick, fades, or gets picked away isn’t just an eyesore. It undermines compliance, loses critical information, and leaves equipment looking unloved. The good news? Every one of these fails has a fix.

Recently, just while out and about, we spotted three classic examples…

1. Barcode Label on a Receipt Machine — Held on With Sellotape

Yes, someone actually “fixed” a failing barcode label with a strip of tape. On a machine that issues receipts. The adhesive had failed, the corners lifted, and the only solution someone could think of was a roll of clear tape.

The result? An untidy, dirt-catching sticker that makes the barcode harder to scan and gives a poor impression of the equipment overall.

Fix: Start with the right adhesive strength for the surface and environment. Industrial-grade adhesives are designed to bond securely to metals, plastics, or powder-coated finishes. With the right choice, you won’t be chasing peeling corners with a roll of tape.

2. Lift Service Label — Half Picked Off

We’ve all been there: stuck in a lift, bored, and absent-mindedly picking at a corner of a sticker. The problem is that those little moments of boredom can destroy a label that’s meant to carry important compliance or service data.

Within seconds, half the label is gone, the details are compromised, and the whole thing looks untidy.

Fix: There are a couple of approaches here.

  • Tamper-evident material breaks up into tiny flakes when someone tries to pick at it. Unless the “picker” fancies spending all day in the lift, they won’t get far.

  • For high-value or high-risk assets, metal asset labels or engraved tags are even better. They can be screwed in place or mounted with heavy-duty adhesive. Try picking one of those apart — you’ll give up long before the tag does.

3. Coffee Machine Label — Completely Faded

This one really hurt. The red logo had almost disappeared, the contact details were hard to read, and the whole thing looked like it had survived a sandstorm. In reality, it had simply faced daily cleaning, heat, and a bit of UV exposure — which quickly wiped away the print.

Fix: Always add lamination to protect print from rubbing off. A laminated surface resists cleaning sprays, UV rays, and daily wear. And if the environment is really tough? Step up to engraved traffolyte or metal tags. These won’t fade because the detail is cut into the material itself.

Why These Fails Matter

Labels might look like small details, but they carry big responsibilities:

  • A barcode enables checkout and asset tracking.

  • A service label proves maintenance compliance.

  • An asset ID connects equipment to digital CAFM records.

When labels fail, compliance records fail with them. Audits become harder. Engineers waste time. And customers lose confidence in the professionalism of the service.

The Right Label for the Right Job

Here’s how to avoid ending up in our “label fail” gallery:

  • Choose lamination for any label exposed to cleaning products or sunlight.

  • Use tamper evident materials when there’s a risk of interference or “bored hands.”

  • Go for engraved or metal asset labels when permanence matters they can’t be peeled, picked, or faded away.

  • Match adhesives to surfaces so the bond is strong from the start.

Final Thought

We’ll admit it: working in the label industry makes us picky. We can’t help but notice when a barcode is taped down, when a service tag is half-peeled, or when a logo has faded into nothing.

But there’s a serious point: these little failures can cause compliance risks and extra costs. The fix is simple use the right label for the job. Laminated, tamper evident, engraved, or metal asset labels make all the difference.

At The Label People, we help facilities managers, contractors, and equipment suppliers choose labels that don’t just look good on day one they stay compliant, durable, and professional for the long haul.
