Aerospace is going digital. The physical world still needs a label.

And it raises a question that rarely gets asked in the boardroom conversations about Industry 4.0: what happens at the physical interface between the digital system and the real world?

From 2024 through 2030, an estimated 12,000 jets are expected to be delivered, each one carrying thousands of components, panels, seats, galley systems, wiring looms, and MRO-critical parts that all need to be identified, tracked, and maintained across a service life measured in decades.

Every sensor node has a serial number. Every LRU has an asset tag. Every harness has a wire marker. Every cabin monument has a maintenance label that needs to survive cleaning chemicals, extreme temperature cycling, and the attentions of engineers working in tight spaces with gloves on.

The digital revolution in aerospace doesn’t eliminate the physical label, but makes it more important. Because the smarter your asset tracking system becomes, the more catastrophic a missing, illegible or non-compliant label is. A digital twin is only as reliable as the physical identification that links it to the real aircraft.

In the MRO world especially, this is acutely understood. Airbus’s Digital Alliance now includes Collins Aerospace, creating a cross-OEM predictive maintenance platform that links cabin systems but that platform depends on accurate, durable physical identification at every asset touchpoint.
